BYU Announces New Housing for Married Students: What It Means for Provo

If you’ve driven through the BYU campus over the years, you’ve probably noticed Wymount Terrace—the long-standing apartment community that has provided housing for married students and families for generations.

Now, after more than 60 years, it’s getting a major update.

Brigham Young University recently announced plans to replace part of the aging Wymount Terrace community with 11 brand-new apartment buildings, creating 240 modern family housing units designed specifically for married students and students with dependent children.

Why the Change?

The current Wymount Terrace buildings were constructed in 1962 and have served thousands of BYU families over the decades. To make room for the new development, nine of the existing buildings on the south side of the community will be demolished.

According to BYU Chief Financial Officer and Vice President of Administration Steve Hafen:

“Wymount Terrace has served BYU student families for more than 60 years. This investment will help ensure that those who call Wymount home continue to have an affordable, supportive environment where they can thrive.”

What Will the New Community Offer?

The new three-story buildings will feature two- and three-bedroom apartments with a focus on affordability, energy efficiency, and creating a welcoming community for student families.

Todd Fischio, BYU’s Director of Residence Life, shared the university’s vision:

“This project aims to enhance living facilities and the overall student experience while fostering Christ-centered communities. In the future, families will have access to affordable, conveniently located, energy-efficient and well-maintained apartments.”

Construction is expected to begin in July, with completion anticipated in approximately two years.

More Growth Around BYU

This isn’t the only housing project happening near campus.

The article also highlights another upcoming redevelopment: the former Park Plaza Apartments site, located just east of BYU, which is planned for demolition and replacement with new student housing by Utah-based builder Cole West.
